At the demanding intersection where innovation meets commercial reality, DMC’s Legal Counsel, Sonia Barber stands out as a leader who speaks fluently across law, business, science and global strategy. An internationally recognised lawyer, Sonia has spent almost twenty-five years advising organisations across the globe, with an emphasis on Australia and the Middle East, on the legal and commercial frameworks that underpin major ventures.

“I’ve been privileged to lead cross-border projects, negotiate high-value transactions, advise on crisis management and dispute resolution, and guide executives through regulatory and governance challenges,” says Sonia.

It’s this background that allows her to contribute so effectively to DMC, where her role sits at the junction of legal strategy, governance rigour and commercial insight to ensure the company’s scientific ambition is supported by appropriate strategy.

“Law supports the realisation of science and technology in so many ways, from establishing appropriate governance frameworks, ensuring good contracting to protecting intellectual property – it’s not just about having a good idea but delivering it in the best way.”

Her introduction to DMC came during the company’s earliest investment conversations.

“The concept was unlike anything I’d previously been involved in. The science was unconventional, the valuation difficult, but the mission had such potential to make a significant impact in the emergency treatment of life-threatening conditions,” Sonia recalls.

“That’s exactly why it deserved attention. There is something quite inexplicably exciting about being involved with a team of people trying to do something that hasn’t been done before.”

Sonia works closely with DMC’s Board and leadership team which she describes as being anchored in this sense of purpose. She has seen firsthand how rare it is for an entire organisation to adopt a mindset of innovative thinking.

“Thinking differently is actually very ambitious and difficult for just one person to do, let alone an entire company. At De Motu Cordis I am seeing that more and more within the team and the Board. It means each member strives to look beyond the obvious, remain flexible and be willing to grow. With that mindset, we’re creating solutions for people who need them the most.”

“Resilience is about continuously aligning every step with our mission,” she continues.

“It’s about pivoting when you must, problem-solving at speed and refusing to be derailed by setbacks.”

The moment she truly understood the potential of DMC’s technology came early. In her first meeting with Professor John Fraser AO, he described the unmatched efficiency of the lungs for drug delivery and the potential in life threatening situations to deliver treatment more effectively.

“Understanding this potential, thinking about how you can not only save a life but make the quality of that life as best as it can be, made me question how I could refuse to get involved.”

Looking ahead, Sonia sees her work with DMC as part of a broader commitment to cultivating the next generation of innovators.

“Before working with this group of people, I don’t believe that I understood how important it was to nurture the minds and talents of the people who have big ideas. Without people with big ideas, the world would be bereft of extraordinary things. When the right group of people come together, there is very little they cannot achieve.”
